A proper hand wash, then the paint is clayed so the surface is smooth. Polishing over bonded contamination just grinds it in.

Dual-action polisher, panel by panel, with the pad and compound matched to the hardness of the paint. Slower than a rotary and much harder to burn an edge with.

Wax and inspect
A protective wax over the corrected paint, then a walk around the car with you in daylight so you can see the difference panel by panel.

Questions about Paint Polishing
What is the difference between polishing and ceramic coating?
Polishing fixes the paint; coating protects it. Polishing removes existing scratches and restores gloss. A ceramic coating adds a hard protective layer on top but does not remove anything. Done together, the polish goes first — otherwise you seal the scratches in.
Can you remove a deep scratch?
If your fingernail catches in it, the scratch has gone through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it — it can only soften how it reads. Anything shallower usually comes out completely.
How long does the result last?
The correction is permanent — those scratches are gone for good. The wax on top lasts a few months. Going back through automatic brush washes will put new swirls in within a season.
Is buffing the same thing as polishing?

Do you wax the car, or can I book a wax on its own?

A wax-only visit is possible, but on paint with swirl marks it is a few weeks of gloss over scratches that are still there — most people are better served by the polish, which includes the wax anyway.
Is machine polishing safe for my paint?
With a dual-action polisher and the right pad, yes. It removes a few microns of clear coat, and a car has enough to be polished several times over its life. The risk comes from rotary machines used in a hurry, which is not how this is done.
